Apple Search Ads installs showing as organic: 6 causes and how to check
Updated 2026-11-02 · 4 min read
attribution: false. Everything else falls into "organic".1. The token was posted too late, or not at all
Your app calls AAAttribution.attributionToken() (iOS 14.3+) and posts the token to Apple's AdServices API. The token is valid for 24 hours. Post it later and Apple returns 404, so the install is never attributed. A 404 can also mean too early: Apple suggests retrying a few times, about 5 seconds apart.
Check: log the HTTP status of the AdServices call. A wave of 404s right after a release usually means the call moved or now runs after a slow step.
2. The install is outside the attribution window
A tap counts for 30 days before the download. A view (view-through attribution, live since March 27, 2025) counts for 24 hours. A tap takes priority over a view. Users who tapped 40 days ago are organic.
3. Age or gender targeting is on
Apple's AdServices changelog for September 2026: the payload returns attribution = false for campaigns using age or gender targeting. If you added demographic targeting, attributed installs from that campaign drop to zero, even though Apple Ads still reports installs.
Check: compare Apple Ads' own tap-installs with your attributed installs per campaign. A campaign with installs in Apple Ads but zero attributed is the tell.
4. Search match hides the keyword
When the install came from search match, the payload has no keywordId. The install is attributed to the campaign, but keyword-level reports show it as unknown.
5. Your tool lumps everything unattributed into "Organic"
RevenueCat, for example, labels anything not attributed to an Apple Ads campaign as Organic. That includes installs where the token call failed. A jump in "organic" can be a measurement failure, not an ad failure.
6. A Basic vs Advanced setup mismatch
RevenueCat's Apple Ads integration has Basic (attribution only) and Advanced (adds campaign names and keyword text). Its docs note that a Basic setup won't get full data if you use Advanced campaigns.
How to catch it the day it happens
The expensive part isn't the bug, it's finding out three weeks later. Watch two lines side by side: Apple Ads installs (from the Apple Ads API) and installs your attribution tool assigns to Apple Ads. When the first stays flat and the second falls to zero, attribution broke. That's exactly the kind of source disagreement WhyItChanged flags.
Questions
How long is the Apple Search Ads attribution window?
30 days for a tap and 24 hours for a view. A tap takes priority over a view.
Why does the AdServices API return 404?
Either the token is older than 24 hours, or the attribution record isn't ready yet. Apple suggests retrying a few times about 5 seconds apart.
Is Apple Search Ads now called Apple Ads?
Yes. Apple's documentation now uses the name Apple Ads. The AdServices framework and attribution API are the same.
