Why did my app downloads drop? A 6-step checklist

Updated 2026-11-02 · 4 min read

Short answer: First rule out a reporting artifact (late data, UTC vs Pacific days). Then check, in order: a paused or capped ad campaign, a release or metadata change on that day, a ranking or category-wide shift, and a change in product-page conversion rate.

1. Is it real?

Recent days are often incomplete: daily reports publish the next morning Pacific Time, and the dashboard and downloaded reports use different time zones. App Analytics and Sales and Trends also count redownloads differently. Compare a full week against the previous week before reacting.

2. Did paid traffic change?

A campaign that hit its budget cap, a lowered bid or a paused ad group shows up as a download drop. Look at ad installs next to total downloads. If the gap equals the ad drop, it's the ads.

3. Did you ship something that day?

A new version, new screenshots, a new subtitle or keyword field (keyword changes go live with a new version), or a price change. Line the drop up against your release dates.

4. Is it search or browse?

App Store Connect's Analytics Reports split downloads by source: App Store search, browse, web referrer and app referrer. A search-only drop points to rankings or keywords. A referrer drop points to a website or partner that stopped sending traffic.

5. Is it the whole category?

Algorithm shifts and seasonality hit many apps at once. If competitors moved too, it's probably not you.

6. Did conversion change?

If impressions held but downloads fell, the product page converts worse: new screenshots, a bad review at the top, or a rating drop.

WhyItChanged puts releases, ad changes, deploys and downloads by source on one timeline, so steps 2 to 4 take one glance instead of four dashboards.

Questions

How long until a keyword change affects downloads?

Keyword field changes go live with a new app version, and rankings typically take days to settle.

Should I react to a one-day drop?

Usually not. Check a full week against the previous week, since the most recent days are often incomplete.
